![]() Investments in renewable energy have soared since the beginning of the century to reach almost 500 billion U.S. Therefore, transitioning to greener energy production methods has become one of the main solutions against climate change. The power generation sector is the main CO₂ emitter in the world. ![]() Produced by HCWH Europe in November 2105. As our natural world changes around us, so does our way of life. Already, freshwater supplies are shrinking, agricultural yields are dropping, our forests are burning, and rising oceans are more acidicall, in part, due to a warming climate. How is climate change being tackled? Global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions stood at around 14.3 billion metric tons in 2021, a significant increase from the pre-Industrial era. An infographic about EDCs contained in medical devices and the reasons that they need to be phased out of healthcare. Our world is changing faster than anyone predicted. On the other hand, the conference came short on significant new steps to curb emissions. In November 2022, COP27 was held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where talks led to a historic agreement to help vulnerable nations deal with losses and damages from climate change’s impacts. It is an important step towards addressing the global challenge of climate change. In this agreement, the global community committed to limit global warming to well below 2☌ and to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5 C. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1997 to extend the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Paris Agreement is a global treaty agreed to by over 190 countries around the world. The annual conference aims to tackle climate change, stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, and reach a post-Kyoto Protocol agreement. The United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change (UNFCC) annually hosts the Conference of the Parties (COP). Climate change has exacerbated the intensity of these events, as global warming increases the evaporation of surface waters into the atmosphere, drying. This year has seen a variety of extreme climate disasters, from flooding in Pakistan to wildfires across Europe. Burning fossil fuels changes the climate more than any other human activity. Climate change: How global warming fuelled extreme climate disasters in 2022. 5 These greenhouse gas emissions have increased the greenhouse effect and caused the earth’s surface temperature to rise. The increase in surface temperature is causing a rise in sea level, a decrease in arctic ice, and a growing number of weather-related catastrophes, including storms, floods, and droughts. Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide concentrations are now more abundant in the earth’s atmosphere than any time in the last 800,000 years. Global temperatures have been consistently among the hottest on record in recent years. ![]() FCPF is set to pay up to $720 million to 15 countries for emission reductions over the next several years. In 2022, the earth’s surface temperature was around 0.91 degrees Celsius warmer than the 20th-century average. The transaction signals to international carbon markets that large-scale programs to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (known as REDD+) can produce the high-integrity, high-quality carbon credits that buyers demand. Earlier in 2021, Mozambique became the first country to be paid by the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility for verified emission reductions, or carbon credits, generated through community-based sustainable forestry. The World Bank supports the monitoring, reporting, and verification of actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (also known as mitigation actions), such as the decommissioning of coal plants or conservation of forests. The map above depicts global temperature anomalies in 2021. Article 6 - The Paris Agreement’s rulebook governing carbon marketsĪrticle 6 allows countries, companies and others to cooperate with each other to deliver on Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement for example, one country can transfer carbon credits for emission reductions to another country, but these credits cannot be counted by both the seller and the buyer. Earth in 2021 was about 1.1C (1.9F) warmer than it was in the late 19th century, when the Industrial Revolution was underway and weather stations were popping up around the world.
